La Mondotte

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquires Chateau Brane-Mouton, which the estate is located at Pauillac in the heart of Medoc, and changes the name to Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Chateau Mouton Rothschild spans 90 hectares of vines to the Northwest of Bordeaux on the edge of the Medoc peninsula.

Terroir is mostly covered with gravel stones mingled with sane and some clay. The thin and poor gravely soil extends down several meters over a clay-limestone base. The vines give elegant powerful, richly tannic and long-lived wines. The finest vines are situated on a hillock called “Plateau de Mouton,” which rises to 27meters above sea-level.

The vineyard consists of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Wines are matured in new French oak barrels. Since 1945, Chateau’s label for each vintage has been illustrated with the reproduction of an original artwork specially created for Mouton by a contemporary artist.

After a long fight by Baron Philippe, Chateau Mouton Rothschild became the fifth Chateau to achieve the status of Premier Grand Cru Class in 1973. 2018 vintage has received 97-100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
